Breaking down barriers

The International Press Institute in November is hosting a "global dialogue platform" for executives and journalists to discuss the relationship between businesses and the media. They hope the meeting helps break down some of the barriers between businesses and the media and helps each side recognize the other's issues respective of the release and analysis of information.

"Journalists have a duty to dig deeper, while the business community has a responsibility to provide information. Bursting economic bubbles and the financial crisis have only made these roles more essential," the IPI writes on its Web site.

The conference includes specialized training sessions for journalists, one-on-one meetings between media and business professionals, a business breakfast discussion for CEOs, senior editors and media executives, and "a role-playing exercise" on the best practices in journalism and business." The forum also includes a session on the impact of social media sites like Twitter on the traditional media, and another on the role of 24-hour media in spreading panic throughout the financial community.

As fun as all that sounds, an added benefit is the location.
Baden, Austria, where the conference is taking place, is described in the conference brochure as having "countless spas with numerous mineral springs," a casino; numerous wineries, wine taverns and vineyards; and a short 26 km drive to Vienna.
