As part an aggressive national effort to grow youth journalism, news literacy and access to new-media tools, this year's five ASNE Reynolds Institute programs trained 162 high school teachers from 41 states and the District of Columbia. The programs focused on helping teachers develop an educational framework to teach students to make sound news judgments; improve the reporting, writing, editing, photo, Web, multimedia, graphics and business skills necessary to operate high-quality, independent student media; and to instill a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the First Amendment.

RESTON, Va. – The American Society of Newspaper Editors has named 24 educators to participate in the third Institute for Journalism Excellence. The 1997 Fellows, representing colleges and universities from around the country, will be working this summer at newspapers across the country and in Canada. The project is funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.


Reynolds Institutes to inspire high school journalism advisers

Coleman: Teach difference between news and opinion

That’s what ASNE President Milton Coleman told the 34 high-school journalism instructors who arrived in Phoenix on Sunday for the ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism Institute held at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. “(Our) credibility comes from the fact that people believe that we are going as straight down the middle as we can,” Coleman said. The ASU event is the first of the five, two-week ASNE Reynolds programs that will be held this summer.


Amicus brief filed in Medill 'Innocence Project' case

In October, the Cook County state's attorney subpoenaed e-mails, grades, and notes and recordings of witness interviews from students at the Medill School of Journalism who were investigating a 1978 homicide case for the school's Innocence Project. Medill is fighting the subpoenas. This afternoon, ASNE joined 17 other media organizations in filing an amicus brief (PDF) in support of the school's position.
