When the War Comes Home
The U.S. has been at war, in Afghanistan and Iraq, for nearly a decade. Across the nation, thousands of soldiers are returning from the battlefield. Every one of them has a story worth telling. What are they
experiencing, both their problems and triumphs? How is the system dealing with their needs, financial and medical? Do their extended, multiple deployments make them different from veterans of other wars? Are we
in uncharted waters, where the burden of war falls disproportionately on a tiny percentage of the population?

Driving Revenue: The Editor as Entrepreneur [11:15 am]
News organizations are in a furious race to monetize their audiences. But at this point it's clear that banner ads and other kinds of website advertising won't be enough to sustain professional newsrooms as they
are presently constituted; so more work remains. How can newsrooms participate in the effort? How can editors form teams and collaborate with sales, marketing and circulation to increase revenue? What are the
ethical boundaries and guidelines in this new world? How can editors uphold standards of professional journalism while participating on the business side?

Diversity Is the Color Green -- Torrance, Level 4
Diversity is green. It is better defined as the emergence of new audiences, the potential to develop new business partners and targeting new consumers with news and information of importance to them.
Innovative media companies will see diversity as one of the most significant business opportunities in years, as new emerging revenue streams gained from the country’s growing diversity replace traditional
business methods that are no longer effective. In an industry starving for innovation and new business models, this session explores diversity in a way that many have never considered: Diversity is green. Will the
transformational media landscape embrace diversity’s potential to grow revenue or will this opportunity be squandered?

Making Print Sell -- Coronado, Level 4
As editors work to expand their reach across media platforms, the core printed newspaper is still an important priority. It may not be as sexy as the emerging digital opportunities, but print still dominates in
audience and revenue so its success is important. Four editors, representing very different approaches and strategies, will share how their organization is working to enhance the quality and success of the
newspaper. From a complete reinvention and reformatting of one newspaper to strategic improvements and additions of another, session participants will leave with ideas on how to make their newspaper more
focused on its audience -- and hopefully more successful. In addition, this session will explore how to link print and digital strategically to expand the print audience while broadening online reach.

News in the Line of Fire: Covering the Drug War in Mexico [2:10 pm]
Outside of war zones, Mexico is the world's most dangerous country for reporters who cover organized crime, drug-cartel violence and the Calderón administration's war on the cartels. More than 35,000,
according to the government, have died violently in the related violence since Calderón took office at the end of 2006. Since then, 38 journalists have died, 17 have disappeared, and countless others have been
threatened, intimidated or attacked. Self-censorship is a way of life for the media in many regions of Mexico. The panel will look at conditions for Mexican and foreign journalists working in Mexico, with a special
focus on what experienced reporters and editors see in the final two years of the Calderón term, and what might be expected as Mexicans prepare for the next presidential election in 2012.

Making News Collaborations Work [10:15 am]
The variety of new collaborative hybrids in journalism is astonishing. To enhance their reportorial firepower, legacy news organizations are now working with j-schools, investigative nonprofits, local blogs,
community news sites and individual readers. In an era of dwindling resources, where anyone with a blog or Twitter feed is a potential competitor, it's important to focus on what you do best and work with others on
the rest. But collaborations aren't easy. What works and what are the perils and pitfalls?
