Bernie Lunzer is President of the Newspaper Guild-CWA, and has served as an elected officer for the past 15 years. He is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. He also attended the Harvard Trade Union Program.
Lunzer started work in the industry in 1979 at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. In his ten years at the paper he worked in advertising, marketing, circulation and the newsroom. He worked for the Twin Cities Newspaper Guild as their Administrative Officer from 1989 to 1995.
Lunzer has been involved in major Guild negotiations at the local and international level since 1980. He originated the Guild's Future of Work initiative, and helped the Guild pursue alternative ownership strategies, which has led to a new cooperative and a new ESOP (employee stock ownership). Lunzer helped spur the Guild to develop its own code of professional conduct. He works closely with the Guild's Equity/Diversity Committee.
