David BoardmanDavid Boardman is executive editor of The Seattle Times and its Web site, seattletimes.com. He has worked at The Times since 1983 in various positions, with a focus on investigative journalism. He was promoted to the paper’s top news executive from managing editor in 2006.

Boardman began his career at a small weekly newspaper in Anacortes, Wash., where he learned how to spell “stephanotis” while writing up local weddings. He also worked at the Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon, Wash., and The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash., before joining The Times.

He is a 10-year director and immediate past president of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), which he helped develop into the nation’s premier journalism-training organization. He was instrumental in creating the successful and ongoing “Unleashing the Watchdogs” training programs for editors, a joint ASNE-IRE project.

Boardman is also president of the Board of Directors of the Center for Investigative Reporting in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has conducted seminars for journalists in Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is the co-chairman of the ASNE Craft Development Committee and was a member of the 2006 Seattle Convention Committee. He is also a member of the Accreditation Committee of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

He is married and the father of two daughters. He enjoys kayaking, hiking, reading, cooking, travel, jazz, playing with his golden retriever and watching Ichiro Suzuki hit a baseball.
