JOHN CHERWA is the Sports Coordinator for the Tribune Company and deputy sports editor of the Los Angeles Times. Previously he was the Associate Managing Editor/sports at the Chicago Tribune and Sports Special Projects Editor of the Orlando Sentinel. He is a past president of the Associated Press Sports Editors and has been chair of the organization’s legal affairs committee since 2003. During that time he has been on the frontline of almost every sports credential issue going back to 2001 when Major League Baseball first tried to restrict media’s access and coverage at games. Cherwa recently worked with representatives of ASNE and APME on the SEC credential issue, successfully getting the league to change several restrictive policies. He has a degree in communications from Florida Technological University (now University of Central Florida) and also taught a graduate level course in the Business of Sports Media at UCF. He has also taught at USC, UCLA and Cal State Fullerton. He has also been a frequent lecturer at the American Press Institute.
