Show your support for use of drones in newsgathering

 
Legislation pending in the House of Representatives could loosen restrictions on the use of micro UAS (UAS weighing under 4.4 pounds, including payload). HR 4441, the Aviation Innovation, Reform and Reauthorization Act, passed the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure last week. As Goldberg explains in a post on his firm's CommLawBlog, the AIRR Act would, among other changes, remove two big rules that inhibit our members' potential to gather news via UAS: 1. the requirement that a commercially licensed pilot operate the drone and 2. the restriction on flying above people.

ASNE joins amicus brief in support of access to public records in NJ

 
ASNE joined an  filed by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in the New Jersey Supreme Court in a case, which might affect one of the more controversial public records issues at the state level: access to police video footage.

Celebrate open government March 13-19 with Sunshine Week 2016

 
There will be a special reporting project available free to all Sunshine Week participants. The Associated Press, The McClatchy Company, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Sacramento Bee, Tribune News Service and others are working on a package of robust enterprise stories, sidebars, an analysis piece, photos, videos and informational graphics.

OpenTheGovernment.org have created questions you can ask federal candidates about their views on open government and transparency. 

ASNE opposes proposed changes to Florida's public records law

 
Florida House Bill 1021 and Senate Bill 1220 would amend the law to create "permissive" award of attorney's fees after litigation, as opposed to the current "mandatory" award of fees. This means that a plaintiff who goes to court to challenge the denial of a request for public records and wins would no longer be guaranteed to receive a reimbursement of attorney's fees.
