The American Society of News Editors provides a wealth of material for practicing journalists, educators and students.

ASNE works to protect journalistic and constitutional freedoms both legally and legislatively. ASNE provides thousands of reporters each year access to our Washington, D.C,.-based legal counsel Kevin Goldberg free of charge. We also inform our members of pending legislation that could affect First Amendment freedoms or government transparency. For example, ASNE joined other journalism and watchdog groups to file an injunction against the NSA and meet with Attorney General Eric Holder after the Department of Justice obtained telephone records from the Associated Press.

ASNE is dedicated to keeping journalists up-to-date about all the latest news in the industry. Our blog offers frequent updates about ASNE conferences, legal news and the annual newsroom census. We want to keep professionals informed about the ever-evolving state of journalism. Check out our tips on how to use social media and our links to news about media innovations from the RJI Futures Lab. For more information about the world of journalism, our Industry Challenges and Opportunities survey details the responses of more than 100 editors about the future of the profession.

ASNE has also taken a lead in promoting journalism education and news literacy among secondary-school and college students. Here you’ll find videos, talking points, links and documents about how to impart journalism skills onto the next generation. As Knight Foundation Senior Advisor Eric Newton wrote, “We need students who can do more than survive today’s journalism realities; we need them to help reinvent news in the digital age.”

We’ve also compiled the ethics codes from dozens of newspapers as a resource for editors looking to craft or refine their own standards.
