What is the ASNE Campaign?
ASNE Foundation launched the Journalism for a New Age Endowment Campaign in 2007 to help quality journalism thrive as the news business is re-shaped by structural changes. It will endow ASNE’s work on the first amendment and strengthen the vital role of news editors as the independent voice for responsible quality journalism. It will enable ASNE to help editors lead in a changing and challenging news environment.

What is the financial goal of the Campaign?
The campaign has a goal of raising $1.125 million in 2009. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will generously match every donation made at a 2:3 ratio ($2 for every $3 donated). The campaign match is good for donations from individuals, corporations (including corporate matching gifts) and foundations.

Can I make a pledge and pay it by the end of the campaign?
The good news is all donations and pledges made in 2009 will be matched by the Knight Foundation. In order for ASNE to retain the Knight matching funds, donors must complete their pledge payments by Oct. 31, 2010.

Are donations tax-deductible?
ASNE Foundation is designated a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, and therefore all donations are deductible to the full extent of the law.

Are there specific programs the endowment will support?
The matching funds from the Knight Foundation will be used to support ASNE’s efforts to increase public awareness of the importance of open government. In particular, it will help support ASNE’s leadership of Sunshine Week, a national initiative that promotes dialogue about open government and freedom of information.

Donor gifts to the campaign will be used to provide a stable source of funding for ASNE and its efforts to effectively respond to the changing landscape of the news industry. It will also provide long term resources to address future, unknown challenges.

How will the endowment fund provide future resources?
The endowment principal will be permanently secured and invested. Investment earnings will be used annually to fund Sunshine Week and other ASNE priorities. Unused investment earnings will be reinvested in the endowment, to help grow the principal, keep up with inflation and create stability during economic downturns.
