Washington Post columnist Margaret Sullivan to headline ASNE conference on trust and community engagement in the wake of a contentious election season
Join the American Society of News Editors in March for a two-day conference of conversations, workshops and networking focusing on building trust through community engagement.
The conference, supported by the First Amendment Center of the Newseum Institute and the USA TODAY Network, will be held March 17-18 at the John Seigenthaler Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Margaret Sullivan, media columnist at The Washington Post, will deliver the opening keynote address. Sullivan, the former public editor at The New York Times, has written extensively about trust, quality journalism and the emergence of so-called 'fake news.'
Workshops will address the role of community engagement for news organizations and what it looks like and provide best practices and examples. Attendees will emerge from the conference better equipped to engage readers and strengthen trust in quality journalism.
Sullivan will be joined by Sally Lehrman, director, Journalism Ethics Program and the Trust Project at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, and Andrew Losowsky, project lead, The Coral Project. Lehrman and Losowsky are deeply engaged in leveraging technology to improve trust and constructive dialogue within the news media ecosystem.
Other confirmed speakers include:
- David Plazas, opinion engagement editor, The Tennessean
- Bob Heisse, editor, The Times of Northwest Indiana
- Mark Baldwin, executive editor, Rockford Register Star
- Rob Gordon, president and CEO, Nashville Public Radio
- David Holwerk, director of communications, Kettering Foundation
- Nico Leone, general manager, KCUR
